Lawyer Normal Okay Okay Venugopal Friday gave consent for initiating contempt proceedings towards stand-up comedian artist Kunal Kamra for his November 18 tweet, saying it was “grossly vulgar and obnoxious” and tended to decrease the authority of the Supreme Courtroom.
The highest regulation officer had final week granted consent for initiation of contempt proceedings towards Kamra for his earlier tweets which allegedly criticised the apex court docket, saying they have been in “unhealthy style” and it was time folks understood that attacking it overtly will entice punishment.
The consent of both the Lawyer Normal or the Solicitor Normal is important, underneath part 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, for initiating contempt proceedings towards an individual.
Venugopal granted the recent consent on a request made on this regard by Prayagraj-based advocate Anuj Singh.
Kamra, in his November 18 tweet, had made an objectionable gesture whereas making a remark towards the Chief Justice of India.
“I’ve gone by your request for consent underneath part 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971 towards Kunal Kamra in respect of the tweet dated November 18, 2020 (at 9.46 PM),” the Lawyer Normal stated in his letter to Singh.

“The stated tweet is grossly vulgar and obnoxious, and I’ve little doubt that it might are likely to decrease the authority of the Supreme Courtroom of India in addition to undermine the arrogance that the litigant public have within the establishment of the Supreme Courtroom of India itself,” he stated.
