Centre asks major ports to waive all charges for ships carrying oxygen and related equipment

The federal government on Sunday stated it has directed all main ports to waive all costs for ships carrying oxygen and associated gear amid a large surge in COVID-19 infections throughout the nation.

In a press release, the Ministry of Ports, Delivery and Waterways stated it has directed all main ports to accord the best precedence within the berthing sequence to the vessels carrying consignments of medical grade oxygen, oxygen tanks, oxygen bottles, moveable oxygen mills and oxygen concentrators.

“In view of the extreme requirement of Oxygen and associated gear within the nation, the Authorities of India has directed all Main Ports, together with the Kamarajar Port Restricted, to waive-off all costs levied by Main Port Trusts (together with vessel-related costs, storage costs and so on),” the assertion stated.

Port chairpersons have been requested to personally supervise logistic operations to make sure unhindered motion of such consignments for berthing of such vessel on prime precedence within the port, unloading of oxygen-related cargo, coordination with Customs and different authorities for quick clearance/ documentation and expeditious evacuation, it additional stated.

“We face an emergency state of affairs as a result of second wave of COVID-19. The key ports will begin implementing the route from immediately onwards,” a senior authorities official stated.
In case, the vessel is carrying different cargo/containers along with the stated oxygen-related cargo, waiver of costs on a pro-rata foundation, contemplating the general cargo or containers dealt with on the port, needs to be supplied for oxygen-related cargo to such vessels, the assertion stated.

The Ports Ministry will monitor the small print of such vessels, cargo and time taken within the port from the time vessel entered within the port limits to exit of cargo from port gate. The federal government on Saturday had waived customs obligation on the import of COVID vaccines in addition to medical-grade oxygen and associated gear.
