New Delhi: A thick blanket of smog choked Delhi on Sunday, maintaining air high quality within the ‘extreme plus’ class a day after authorities imposed stage 4 curbs beneath the Graded Response Motion Plan (GRAP), with the capital’s 24-hour common air high quality index (AQI) recorded at 460 at 8 am.
It was 431 at 4 pm on Saturday. Authorities had introduced GRAP stage 3 on Saturday morning after the AQI crossed 400. Stage 4 curbs have been enforce following an emergency assembly convened within the night, citing a rising pattern within the AQI.
Forecasts present no instant aid is in sight, with the AQI set to remain extreme all through Sunday. It could marginally enhance to ‘very poor’ on Monday, the Early Warning System for Delhi (EWS) stated.
At 8 am, all 39 lively ambient air high quality stations have been within the ‘extreme’ class, with some stations getting ready to ‘maxing out’ at 500. These included Rohini (499); Bawana, Jahangirpuri and Vivek Vihar (495 every); and DTU, Wazirpur and Ashok Vihar (493 every).
Situations remained unfavourable for the dispersion of pollution, with calm winds and reasonable fog persisting. The India Meteorological Division (IMD) had issued an alert for potential dense fog within the metropolis on Sunday morning.
The bottom visibility was recorded at 350 metres at Palam and 200 metres at Safdarjung, the IMD stated.
“Palam reported visibility of lower than 1,000 metres and was within the shallow fog class since 9 pm on Saturday. It dropped to 500 metres at 3 am, 400 metres at 7 am and additional all the way down to 350 metres at 8 am. Safdarjung in the meantime recorded 300 metres at 5.30 am and additional touched 200 metres at 8 am,” an IMD official stated.
Fog is classed as shallow when visibility is between 500 and 1,000 metres, ‘reasonable’ when between 200 and 500 metres, and ‘dense’ beneath 200 metres.
Winds have been nearly calm, with sufficient moisture out there for fog, Skymet vice-president Mahesh Palawat stated. “Winds have been principally calm since Friday. This has led to the buildup of pollution and no dispersion. We will count on related situations on Sunday as a result of prevailing western disturbance, earlier than some marginal aid from Monday as winds enhance once more,” he stated.
The Central Air pollution Management Board (CPCB) classifies air high quality as “reasonable” when the AQI is between 101 and 200, “poor” between 201 and 300, and “very poor” between 301 and 400. Past 400, air high quality is termed “extreme”. For the aim of GRAP, 450 and above is termed “extreme plus”, with CPCB values not going past 500 — a threshold already thought of significantly harmful by the air pollution company.
Beneath levels 3 and 4 of GRAP, there’s a ban on all development and demolition actions within the area; a ban on personal four-wheelers (BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel); a ban on the entry of vehicles into Delhi; and obligatory hybrid courses (as much as Class X), amongst different restrictive measures aimed toward curbing air pollution.
Beforehand, a three-day streak of ‘extreme’ air high quality was recorded from November 11 to 13.
