Delhi: Police to fast-track cases of transgenders

Delhi Police Commissioner S N Shrivastava has directed {that a} monitoring cell, headed by a JCP rank officer, be set as much as monitor instances of offences towards transgender individuals. “The federal government has enacted the Transgender Individuals (Safety of Rights) Act, 2019 on December 5, 2019 and has since notified the Transgender Individuals (Safety of Rights) Act, 2020 on September 25, 2020. The regulation mandates enough steps to be taken by state governments/UTs for not solely offering for welfare measures to be taken, however inter-alia, steps to be taken for rescue, safety and rehabilitation of a transgender,” the order states.

Deo additional states, “As per Part 18 of the Act, it’s a punishable offence if anybody harms or injures or endangers the life, security, well being or well-being, whether or not psychological or bodily, of a transgender particular person or tends to do acts, together with inflicting bodily abuse, sexual abuse, verbal and emotional abuse, financial abuse… (it) shall be punishable with imprisonment for a time period not lower than six months, however which can lengthen to 2 years with positive.”

Deo stated that as per the mandate laid underneath Part 11 of the Act, the police commissioner has directed the JCP of Particular Police Unit for Girls and Youngsters (SPUWAC) to ascertain the monitoring cell.
