The US on Friday warned China after a standoff within the South China Sea between China and the Philippines, saying it stood by Manila amid an “escalation that immediately threatens regional peace and stability”.

Beijing “shouldn’t intervene with lawful Philippine actions within the Philippines’ unique financial zone”, US State Division spokesperson Ned Value mentioned in an announcement.

On Thursday, the Philippines condemned “in strongest phrases” the actions of three Chinese language coast guard vessels that it mentioned blocked and used water cannon on resupply boats headed in the direction of a Philippine-occupied atoll within the South China Sea.

“The US stands with our Philippine allies in upholding the rules-based worldwide maritime order and reaffirms that an armed assault on Philippine public vessels within the South China Sea would invoke US mutual protection commitments,” Value mentioned.

“The US strongly believes that PRC (Individuals’s Republic of China) actions asserting its expansive and illegal South China Sea maritime claims undermine peace and safety within the area,” he added.

The incident got here as US President Joe Biden and Chinese language President Xi Jinping mentioned a variety of points in a three-hour video name.
